چکیده

In this paper we present results from an ongoing controller comparison study at the National Renewable Energy Laboratory’s (NREL’s) National Wind Technology Center (NWTC). The intention of the study is to demonstrate the advantage of using modern multivariable methods for designing control systems for wind turbines versus conventional approaches. We will demonstrate the advantages through field-test results from experimental turbines located at the NWTC. At least two controllers are being developed sideby-side to meet an incrementally increasing number of turbine load-reduction objectives. The first, a multiple single-input, single-output (m-SISO) approach, uses separately developed decoupled and classicially tuned controllers, which is, to the best of our knowledge, common practice in the wind industry. The remaining controllers are developed using state-space multiple-input and multiple-output (MIMO) techniques to explicity account for coupling between loops and to optimize given known frequency structures of the turbine and disturbance. In this first publication from the study, we present the structure of the ongoing controller comparison experiment, the design process for the two controllers compared in this phase, and initial comparison results obtained in field-testing.

Refinements and Tests of an Advanced Controller to Mitigate Fatigue Loads in the Controls Advanced Research Turbine: Preprint

Wind turbines are complex, nonlinear, dynamic systems forced by aerodynamic, gravitational, centrifugal, and gyroscopic loads. The aerodynamics of wind turbines are nonlinear, unsteady, and complex. Turbine rotors are subjected to a complicated 3-D turbulent wind inflow field, with imbedded coherent vortices that drive fatigue loads and reduce lifetime. Design of control algorithms for wind tur...

Power and Velocity Control of Wind Turbines by Adaptive Fuzzy Controller during Full Load Operation

Research on wind turbine technologies have focused primarily on power cost reduction. Generally, this aim has been achieved by increasing power output while maintaining the structural load at a reasonable level. However, disturbances, such as wind speed, affect the performance of wind turbines, and as a result, the use of various types of controller becomes crucial. This paper deals with two ada...

Fixed-structure H∞ control design for linear Individual Pitch Control of two-bladed wind turbines

In this paper, a fixed-structure Individual Pitch Control (IPC) design method for two-bladed wind turbines is presented. IPC is an active load reduction technique designed to lower wind turbine loads, which are caused by continuously varying wind conditions. Based on load measurements, the once-per-revolution (1P) loads and harmonics of this frequency (2P, 3P, etc.) can be reduced by rotating (...

Dynamics and Control of Lateral Tower Vibrations in Offshore Wind Turbines by Means of Active Generator Torque

Lateral tower vibrations of offshore wind turbines are normally lightly damped, and large amplitude vibrations induced by wind and wave loads in this direction may significantly shorten the fatigue life of the tower. This paper proposes the modeling and control of lateral tower vibrations in offshore wind turbines using active generator torque. To implement the active control algorithm, both th...
